Shiva, often referenced as Siva and meaning "The Auspicious One," is one of the principal deities of Hinduism, known as Mahadeva ("Great God"). His attributes encompass limitless transcendence, unchanging essence, and formlessness. Moreover, Lord Shiva presents multiple forms—both benevolent and fierce. In his benevolent aspect, he is depicted as an omniscient Yogi residing on Mount Kailash and as a family man with his wife Parvati and children Ganesha and Kartikeya. Conversely, in his fierce representations, he is often illustrated vanquishing demons. Shiva also holds the title of the patron god of yoga and the arts.
The iconographic features frequently associated with Shiva include the third eye on his forehead, the serpent Vasuki around his neck, the crescent moon adornment, the holy river Ganga flowing from his matted hair, the trishula as his weapon, and the damaru as his musical instrument. Shiva is commonly worshiped in the form of Lingam. Additional names attributed to him include Mahadeva, Mahesha, Maheshvara, Shankara, Shambhu, Rudra, Rishikesha (the Man of Knowledge), Hara, Trilochan, Devendra (Chief of the Gods), and Trilokinatha (Lord of the Three Realms).
Maha Shivratri (Sivarathiri) is an annual festival celebrated on the 13th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna according to the Hindu calendar. This day holds significant importance for devotees of Lord Shiva. Maha Shivratri marks the night during which Lord Shiva performed the 'Tandava' dance and serves as the day he married Parvati. Celebrations often involve special prayers and rituals directed towards Shiva, especially via the Abhishek—a ritual performed throughout the night involving offerings of water, milk, yogurt, and honey. Bel (Aegle marmelos) leaves are traditionally offered to Lord Shiva, regarded as essential for a prosperous life. The offering of these leaves is believed to carry immense rewards when given without personal intention.
The Kumbh Mela represents a significant Hindu pilgrimage where devotees gather to bathe in sacred rivers. Regarded as one of the largest peaceful gatherings globally, it is estimated that around 100 million people attended the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad in 2013. This gathering occurs every third year at one of four locations: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik, and Ujjain—each hosting the event every twelfth year. The Ardha Kumbh Mela takes place at Haridwar and Allahabad every sixth year. The sacred rivers associated with these locations include the Ganges at Haridwar, the confluence of Ganges and Yamuna (with mythical Saraswati) at Allahabad, Godavari at Nashik, and Shipra at Ujjain. The term "Kumbh Mela" originates from Hindi; in Sanskrit and other Indian languages it is known as Kumbha Mela, where 'Kumbha' signifies a pitcher and 'Mela' denotes a fair.
